I know that I am slow to get on the popular fiction bandwagon. If it is an Oprah book, chances are, I have not read it. It’s just not my thing. I prefer nonfiction generally, stuff that many people would find boring. However, I was encouraged by several people to read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. So, Friday as I was leaving school, I stopped in the library and picked it up. I went home, went about the usual routine, and when I had a minute I sat down with the book.
I got up about four hours later. I found it to be a riveting book. Very difficult content, not easy to read about many of the things that happen in the book, but it was a beautifully written novel. Just beautiful. Insightful as well. The author gave me a perspective on Afghanistan to which had not previously been exposed. He caused me to think about things in a different way. I truly enjoyed the book even though it was not easy to take in some of the events in the plot.
It’s not for the faint of heart, but I would highly recommend it. I am taking home A Thousand Splendid Suns this weekend, and I can’t wait.
