Confession Tuesday

Today's confession? Football.

Last Friday night there was no football game for us. Our team had a bye this week. I was greatly disappointed.

Since I was a little girl I have spent many, many Friday nights under the lights in a stadium. My parents, who had little money for "extra" stuff as I was growing up, took our family to see the football game at the high school. We hardly missed any home games. My father really enjoyed going, my mother enjoyed seeing my father relax and have fun, and it was a relatively inexpensive thing to do for our family on a night out.

I so looked forward to eating popcorn, watching the cheerleaders, hearing the marching band and seeing the players make the magic happen on the field. I learned at a young age the nuances of football. Not many girls my age knew that much about football...not that many cared about football. Not me. I loved it. My sisters and I would eat all of our popcorn, then we would tear the top part of our box into tiny pieces of confetti. We would wait anxiously for victory so that we could scatter our celebration all over the place!

As I grew older and went to college, my Alma mater did not have a football team...much to my disappointment. They have since renewed their football program. Yeah! Once I graduated and became gainfully employed as a teacher, my Friday nights had purpose once again. I did not realize how much I had missed it...a passion shared by many, like my friend at Catholic Teacher Musings.

So now I have two children of my own who are both in the marching band. I have a dual purpose for watching. I find myself watching the game becoming hoarse from coaching from the sidelines, but it's OK. I have the halftime show with my girls to relax, recover, and develop strategies to yell into the huddle for the second half.

But alas...a bye this week. Sure will be glad to see next weekend.

I always loved going to high school football games. Unfortunately my college didn't have a football team either.

And I do love me some marching band! Nothing like hearing those drums to really get you going!!

Ever since I was a little girl we have watched football. Besides watching high school games, my father was a Dallas Cowboys fan. I think that he chose the Cowboys because he enjoyed the friendly rivalry with his own father, a Redskins fan. My grandfather was a football fan too. My dad would always explain to me what was going on in the game, and that is how I learned about it. I learned from my daddy and Tom Landry. :)

There is something about watching a football game under the lights that is unlike witnessing any other sport. I don't know what it is...but it is real.
