Canyonlands, UT

We woke up and had to get busy right away packing things back up to move on. Check out at the campground was at 11 am. We did a last load of laundry and got showers before heading out into Utah. We got a pretty late start because of all the odds and ends to finish. We drove through Cortez and into Monticello, Utah. Then we drove up to the road to Canyonlands National Park. It was probably the most impressive place that we had seen so for. The girls fell asleep on the ride out there and the heat was very oppressive so we didn’t even wake them up. It was about 108* there. It was a beautiful desert. The rocks were just so massive you can’t even describe them. We stopped at Newspaper Rock to see the petroglyphs and then into the Needles sections of Canyonlands. We drove around in the campground but it was so hot and there was little shade. It would be difficult to camp there with the kids. The rocks there were just spectacular though. I took a picture of Tom and Carson up on a huge rock. The view was amazing. We stopped for a minute in the desert and Tom took my picture. We decided not to camp there so we drove on back out of the Needles area and back south toward Blanding. We stopped at The Oldtymer to have dinner. We all ate well and watched the dust devils and wind whip the dust across the desert as a thunderstorm approached. The rain was pretty coming across the desert like that. We also saw a wildfire on the drive to Blanding. It didn’t look too huge, but big enough. You could smell the smoke even as far as we were. After dinner we decided to drive on to Bryce Canyon. We started driving thinking that we would get the most part of the way over with, but we stopped at Hite Park in Glen canyon NP to sleep. We were all very tired. The campground there had orchards of apricot trees. It was pretty cool. We got up about 7 am and drove on in the direction of Bryce. We drove into Bryce Canyon National Park about 2 pm and chose a campsite. It was already rather crowded. We drove around to the RV section because we had the trailer and the tent sites were pretty small for trying to park the trailer. We set up our site and ate a little late lunch. We drove up to the campstore and showers. The girls and I looked around the store while Tom took his shower and then I got a quick shower. Everything in the campstore was ridiculously expensive, and of course the girls wanted to buy everything. I wouldn’t let them buy anything. The showers there were horrible. We had to pay two bucks for a ten-minute shower in a tin can of a shower. That first day though, I was happy to pay for it. We rode our bikes up to Inspiration Point and took in the view. We walked around the rim of the canyon for a minute or two. I was getting pretty late. It was all uphill to the point. We had a fun ride back down. By the time got back the campground had filled up. There were many foreigners there. I was surprised by the number. We all ate a little dinner and turned in fairly early.
