We drove down rt. 56 to Springer, New Mexico and south on I25 for just a bit until we got to rt.120, which was absolutely gorgeous. The mountains are just amazing. We drove for several miles maybe 25 I think. And then we decided to take the scenic route to the campground. We took this dirt road, which WAS on the map mind you, state maintained road. It was like Bob’s road. The drive was incredible but very tough on the equipment. That poor trailer took a beating and so did the van we later came to know. The canoe put a dent in the back door of the van. A pretty bad one. And it’s only the third day. The road was beyond word in beauty. We were a good ways to the campground, but we finally arrive at Coyote Creek State Park about 4 pm. We set up camp right after a big rain shower. The whole time we were drive down Bob’s road we could watch the storm come in. The lightning was beautiful to watch over the mountains. And the rain was coming across the valley you could see it coming. It was some gorgeous. I can’t even think of anything else to call it. We got to the park and set up then we had had it. We had not really slept in what seemed forever and we were starving, and tired, you name it. We decided to eat a good meal out and we needed to go to Wal-Mart anyway. There was a Wal-Mart in Las Vegas NM about 47 miles away. We drove into town and ate at Kbob’s Steakhouse. Kbob was alright, but nothing to brag about. We were happy to get it though. We did a little shopping at the Wal-Mart and headed back to the camp. We got back to the camp and thankfully we had set everything up already because it could not have done it then. It did rain while we were out in town. We had tried to prepare for that though and it wasn’t too bad. The tent got a little wet on the edge, but we could dry it right up. We went to bed and boy were we
tired. We all were pretty cold though. It was about 65*-70* when we got the campsite, but during the night it must have dropped to the low 50’s. It was chilly. I think Charlotte took it the hardest. We all took showers before bed and bundled up good, but bless her heart, she just doesn’t take the cold very well. Carson was fine; he stayed bundles up and slept well. I slept well for that matter, and Joanna too, but Tom said her was cold and Charlotte was cold too. We wok e up about 7 am and ate a little breakfast and had a little coffee. We had to break down and buy a coffee pot for the camp stove because we had no electric and haven’t since the first night. We figured if we didn’t have electricity so far we might not have it in many places so we broke down and got the pot. We all got dressed and cleaned up after eating. While I straightened up the site and van Tom took the kids on a bike ride. This is where we had our first mishap. Joanna was going a little fast and hit a little river bump and took a BIG tumble. She was pretty hurt. Her elbows and shoulder and hand were skinned badly. She has road rash all down her arm and side and chest. She has a large abrasion on the side, which was swollen, and she was bleeding. I think is scared her badly and she was in a little bit of a shock. Some people stayed with her while Tom road back to get the van and me. She was very upset and bleeding. We took her down to the shower and I cleaned her up pretty well. It was very painful for her. She was still in a little shock. She was shaken badly and crying. I dressed her and we took her to the ranger. He looked at her wounds and helped us dress them and everything. We started to pass out in the ranger station. After that she was very tired and weak. We got her into the van and let her rest and watch a movie. She was very tired and took a little nap. She says that she feels better now. We decided that since she was pretty limited in mobility we would drive around and
look around at the sites. We are pretty near a ghost town and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. So we are on our way now. The drive up is just so incredible. You can see Eagle’s Nest the highest peak in NM it is over 13000 feet. It’s just so amazing. We drove on to Elizabethtown Ghost Town. It sure wasn’t much. It was Virginia City way back in the day.

We stopped and got the girls a little something. We took a few pictures. It was not too much to look at, but the lady there told us about the big pow-wow that is happening this weekend. I think we are going to stay for the extra day with Joanna hurt and everything. We drove on around what is called the Enchanted Circle. It’s this circle you can drive that has historic markers and everything. We drove to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and stood out over the gorge. It was so vast. Very impressive. We go Joanna out so that she could see. It’s hard to imagine that the river did all of that to the land. We drove on farther and saw dust devils out in the desert. The kids thought that was cool. The scenery was just breathtaking. You can’t even describe it. We took lots and lots of pictures.
