We woke up and ate a little something. After breakfast Tom took the kids down to the small pond that is on the land of the state park to go fishing while I packed up the camp. I had finally finished packing everything up and rode my bike down to find Tom and the kids. I saw Tom, in the van, stopped on the road. He was talking to someone. It turns out that he was getting a ticket for fishing without a license. He wasn’t very happy about that. He had been helping Joanna fish because she was hurt. The game warden would not budge on it either. Ranger Pete Martinez told us that the game warden had been getting very tough on people hunting and fishing without a license because all of the locals were having trouble with game eating their crops and such. He told us that you are not even allowed to shoot game on your own property. Hard to imagine. The whole ticket process seemed like a racket. Oh well. It was fairly late before we left the camp after all of that stuff. We drove on to Taos and stopped at Wendy’s to get a bite to eat. Then we went on to the pow-wow just northwest of Taos. It was very interesting. When we first got there it was not very crowded. We walked around to all the vendors, and the girls bought some Indian jewelry. I got a necklace and earrings too. It was pretty warm. Maybe 85* something like that. Once the sun started to go down, it began to cool off. We all sat in our chairs under an arbor that the tribe had made. It was very pretty. It was made in a circle with one opening. There was an announcer booth right across from us. We were not the only folks from far away. There were people there from France and England. The two ladies that sat behind us were from Rock y Mount NC. Carson was mesmerized by the dancing and colorful clothing. It was supposed to begin at 7 pm, but they were late starting. They finally began the Grand Entry. That is were the tribes all march in wearing their traditional clothing and carrying the flags of the countries. US, Canada, and the various tribes represented. There were several different groups that accompanied the dancers who played drums and sang. They provide the music in a prescribed style, and the dancers performed various dances. It was very beautiful and interesting. Even the tiniest children could dance wonderfully. They were amazing! And the clothing was incredible. We left
there fairly late. About 9:30 pm to drive to Cortez, Colorado. We drove until about 1 am. Tom and I both were so tired we just could not do it anymore. We stopped at some park. We don’t even remember the name of it. It was in Colorado somewhere on rt. 17. We had made a wrong turn somewhere. We were so tired and there were elk everywhere on the road. We just couldn’t look for them anymore. We drove to Cortez, Colorado and found A & A Campground to stay at for the night. We drove for a good while after having woke up at the park where we didn’t know the name of it. We had driven about 8 miles out of the way. We had to backtrack just a little. We drove through Durango and stopped at Chimney Rock Archeological Site. We drove up to the mountain and took the guided hike through the archeological site. It was such a beautiful hike. The view was incredible. All around as far as you could see just was incredibly beautiful. Our guide’s name was Charley, and he was very knowledgeable and informative. He explained all
about the various house sites and religious sites and the various formations that we could see. It was wonderful. We took the hike and it was very nice except for poor Joanna. I think that she had a hard time after a while. It was very hot up there. The sun was right on top of you. Carson got quite sunburned. We all enjoyed the hike though. After the hike we drove on to find a site. We arrived at the campground and set up our camp. About 5 pm. We made some dinner of beans and rice and hot dogs. My dinner of course did not include the hot dog. We went down and got showers and washed all of our clothes. We needed to do laundry! It took us so long to get all of that done that we missed the fossil hunt the first night. They have fossil hunts at the campground there. We finished up eating and cleaned up then went down to town about 7 miles away to Wal-Mart. We needed just a few things. Mostly we needed bandages for Joanna. We came back to camp about 10:30 pm to find that the terrible wind from the storm had broken one of our tent poles. The tent was half down. It wasn’t pretty. We had to make do for the night because it was late and windy and we were all tired. We finally went to sleep fairly late.
