We left and drove west to Kansas City. We drove around the city, but I don’t think it saved any time. There was right much traffic and it was quite a ways around the city. We thought that we might stop and make some lunch at Clinton State Park. It is the park where we had planned to stay the first night, but we didn’t quite make it there. The lake there was very pretty and big. It’s maintained by the Army Corp of Engineers. It’s a big dam. It was so hot there about 102* and there was no swimming unless you hiked a mile down to the actual lake which would be fine, it’s the hike back up to the van that we would be hating! Instead of staying there we decided to drive on father until it cooled off some. The heat here is incredible. It is much worse here than at home. No breeze or anything. Kansas is primarily big fields and rolling hills at the beginning. The farther into Kansas the bigger the fields become. It’s quite pretty. ! Just after Junction City we turned southwest.
The fields and farms are gorgeous. Just as far as you can see is farmland. I really thought it was very pretty. We stopped just north of Junction City at Milford Lake State Park to make dinner. The kids were able to swim for a little while in the lake there and we made some dinner. It was still extremely warm there. Even after the sun started to go down it did get better and there was a breeze off of the water, but it was still warm. We all ate dinner and the kids let off some energy in the water. It was a beautiful park. The water in the lake was 78* and the brochure said that it freezes in the winter. It’s hard to imagine that drastic of a temperature change in the water, but it must happen from what they say. We made dinner at the park. We all ate spaghetti. While dinner was cooking the girls and Carson took a dip in the lake. There were several other people swimming in the lake. The water was warm, and even I waded in for a while. The water was about 78* or so. It felt nice after such a hot day. Carson enjoyed sitting on the bottom of the lake and throwing rocks. Tom even gave Joanna and Charlotte a few lesson in rock skipping. They did pretty well. After a refreshing swim and dinner, we decided to keep on driving so that we could get the distance while the kids were sleeping. It is much easier to drive like that. In the daytime we have to stop four hundred times which is not that bad if we are just cruising for the sites but if we are trying to make time for long distance it makes it unbearable.
